Ludhiana: Bajaj College celebrated International Girl Child Day today. College girls gathered to celebrate their being and to cheer for themselves. Annie Bajaj, college director, encouraged the girl students to rise above the stereotypical clichés of beauty and to empower themselves. Shikha Dhall, Principal, commended the girls for their optimistic views.
The Computer Applications Department of the GGNIMT (Gujranwala Guru Nanak Institute of Management & Technology, Civil Lines) organised an interactive seminar on ‘Importance of Bioinformatics’ for the students of BCA and MCA. Manpreet Singh, Asst Prof, Dept of Information Technology, GNDEC, was the resource person for the day. He explained the term bioinformatics as an interdisciplinary field that develops methods and software tools for understanding the biological data. He said in this field, a biologist performs research in laboratory and collect DNA and protein sequences, gene expressions while the computer scientists are involved in developing algorithms, tools, software to store and analyse the data. He said as an interdisciplinary field of science, bioinformatics combines computer science, statistics, mathematics, and engineering to analyse and interpret biological data. Highlighting the broad spectrum applications of bioinformatics, Singh said there were a large number of fields that are using bioinformatics such as medicine, microbial genome applications agriculture. Singh pointed out some of the exemplary research and project works undertaken in this area. — TNS
