KASHMIR INTER DISTRICT WOMEN’S CRICKET CHAMPIONSHIP ORGANIZED BY JKWCA, SPONSORED BY ARMY COMMENCES AT MANASBAL
GANDERBAL: The Kashmir Inter District Women’s Cricket Championship 2017, being conducted at Sainik School Manasbal, was today inaugurated by Maj Gen BS Raju, YSM, GOC Victor Force, in a grand ceremony.
In continuation to Indian Army’s efforts to encourage sports in Kashmir Valley.
Ganderbal Based 5 Rashtriya Rifles Battalion, in association with J&K Women’s Cricket Association launched the much awaited championship showcasing the talent and commitment Kashmiri girls bring to the sport.
12 teams from all parts of the Kashmir Valley are participating in the event.
Numerous dignitaries including SSP Ganderbal, Fayaz Ahmad Lone, Principal GCOPE, Dr. Hartej Singh, President JKWCA, Gulshan Ara, State Coordinator Shah Aijaz, Organising Secretary Sheikh Mohd Shafi, other office bearers, prominent persons, media personnel and members from the sports fraternity were present for the opening ceremony.
Large audience including local population, college and school students gathered to witness the opening ceremony and the matches.
The Chief Guest, Maj Gen BS Raju, in his address to the teams, encouraged the young players to utilise this golden opportunity not only to showcase their talents but also to imbibe some of the most important life lessons that sports teaches. He appreciated the efforts of the CO 5RR, Col M Gururaj and whole organising committee for conducting the event and was pleased to see the numbers of enthusiastic audience that had turned out for the match. He declared the tournament open amidst fanfare and excitement.
The tournament being one of its kind, contributing immensely towards Women Empowerment, was hailed by the attendees for the encouragement it offered to young girls, to showcase their sporting spirit, talent and dedication towards the game, as also breaking the stereotyping prevalent in the society. The exploits of the Indian Womens Cricket Team in the Womens ICC World Cup was conspicuously remembered by the players.
The opening ceremony was followed by an inaugural exhibition match between Kashmir North and Kashmir South. Kashmir North won the toss and selected to bat first, managing to score 39/5 in 10 overs. In reply, Kashmir South managed to overcome this target easily in the 5th over, losing only 2 wickets. There couldn’t have been a better start to the tournament, setting the bench marks for the teams competing for the coveted championship.
Two more matches were played in the latter half of the day between Ganderbal A and Srinagar B and Ganderbal B and Budgam.
The final match of the tournament will be played on 15 Oct 2017 at Sainik School Manasbal.
