Shillong, Dec 6: Despite the winter chill setting in already, Winter Session of the Meghalaya Legislative Assembly promises to be hot as the Nationalist People’s Party (NPP) has vowed “no let-off” in its efforts bring a resolution against Assembly Speaker AT Mondal.
And should the political pyrotechnics materialise, the proposed resolution will be seen as an attempt to embarrass the Mukul Sangma-led government,
With at least eight legislators from the ruling dispensation now singing to the tune of the Opposition and more than eager to take on the incumbent, a lot of fireworks is expected inside the House.
NPP legislator James K Sangma told The Sentinel on Tuesday that the proposed resolution against the Speaker is not to bring down the government, but to question him on the less number of sittings that the House had each year.
“We have always wanted the government to be made accountable on its assurances that were made on the floor of the House a,” the NPP leader stated, adding, “We are also raking up the false promises made by the government through participation in debates during the Assembly sessions.
“The Congress-led government has failed the people of Meghalaya, and we will be failing in our responsibilities by not questioning the government or move a resolution that can make the government realise, albeit late, ahead of the 2018 Assembly polls,” Sangma emphasised.
The Chief Minister has been boasting that the Congress will come up trumps in the election with more than 40 seats in the 60-member House. On the other hand, the NPP, UDP, HSPDP and BJP have been claiming that the ruling incumbent will be dumped by the electorate next year.
