The New Year has brought a lot of new shows across channels. One of the news shows to make debut this year is Meri Durga. It will air on Star Plus. The show based on a father and daughter relationship will take the evening slot of 6.30 pm for ‘Suhani Si Ek Ladki’. Suhani won’t go off air but will have a new slot of 5 pm. The decision was taken by the Star Plus team to create a new evening slot. A similar decision was taken two years back when Veera was moved from 10.30pm to 5pm. So, Star Plus is once again reviving the evening prime time band with shows like Suhani Si Ek Ladki, Mere Angne Mein , Jaana Na Dil Se Door and Meri Durga. The show will compete with Thapki Pyaar Ki on Colors and Zee TV’s Bin Kucch Kahe.

Meri Durga is a unique story set in Haryana like Dangal. Here, the lead protagonist Durga ends up being an athlete and makes her village and father proud. She is a motherless child and her father, who is a peon wants to see his daughter educated. After Amanaat, this is a show that will focus on a father-daughter’s relationship. The show is said to be inspired from veteran Indian athlete P T Usha’s life. The show has child actor Ananya Agarwal playing the young 12 year old Durga while actor Vicky Ahuja plays Yashpal her father. The show has been shot in real locations of Haryana and a similar set has been erected in Mumbai.

Mostly TV serials are about mothers and daughters but in this it is a father who aspires for a better future for his daughter. He believes that his daughter can bring respect, name and social status to the family. Will Durga be able to make the dreams of her father Yashpal her own? The same theme was recently explored in Aamir Khan’s Dangal. Set against the backdrop of Haryana, a state with the highest rate of female foeticide, where girls have to forsake their education for manual labour, Meri Durga is the story of a father who against all odds, is determined to educate his daughter. The daughter despite her best efforts and noble intentions falls short of his expectations academically. She ends up being an athlete.

Meri Durga is produced by Paperback films (Ravindra Gautam and Pradeep Kumar) Star Plus. Ravindra Gautam has produced Armanon Ka Balidaan-Aarakshan in the past. He made his directorial debut with Kasautii Zindagi Kay and has directed hit shows like Bade Acche Lagte Hai, Kumkum Bhagya, Pratigya, Madhubala, Pavitra Ristha and many more. He has directed the film Ekkees Toppon Ki Salaami as well.
