Measles in Hennepin County, Mumps at University of Minnesota
In a follow-up on the measles outbreak in Hennepin County, MN, The Minnesota Department of Health (MDH) has reported an additional confirmed measles case, bringing the total cases to 12.
In addition, health officials offer the following details on the outbreak:
- All of the cases are currently in Hennepin County.
- All of the cases are confirmed to be unvaccinated.
- The cases are children ages 0 through 5 years.
- All of the confirmed cases are Somali Minnesotan.
In the past 20 years, since 1997, Minnesota reported 68 cases (including the 12 recorded to date in 2017), with the vast majority being imported cases.
In related vaccine-preventable disease news, a Fox 9 news report notes that there are six confirmed mumps cases at the University of Minnesota. University officials notified the campus community Thursday.
The MDH says there are usually about 10-20 mumps cases reported in the state each year.
