Western Tamil Nadu posts mixed results

There were ups and downs in the overall pass percentage in the eight districts in Western Tamil Nadu compared to 2016. The overall pass percentage of four districts in this region – The Nilgiris, Coimbatore, Tirupur and Namakkal – improved, compared to the previous year.

Students sharing their SSLC marks with friends in Coimbatore on Friday Chennai: In all the districts, the pass percentage of girls was better than the boys. Coimbatore stood atop the list of 33 districts, with most number of schools that had secured 100 per cent pass in the Class 12 board exams, the result for which was released last Friday. But in the SSLC, Virudhunagar, with 262 schools securing 100 per cent pass pushed Coimbatore to the second spot – with 238 schools. As many as 1,329 out of the 2,891 schools in this region (45.97 per cent) recorded a 100 per cent pass in the SSLC exams. This is more than the 34 per cent schools that had recorded this figure in the Class 12 board exams this year. Three districts have more than 50 per cent schools that have secured 100 per cent pass.
Erode was the top performer in terms of overall pass per cent, in the eight western districts, by securing 97.97 per cent, which is the fourth highest in the State. Of the 351 schools from which students appeared for the SSLC exams, 204 schools (58.11 per cent) recorded 100 per cent pass. However, Erode  has fared better over the last two years – with the pass percentage standing at 98.04 in 2015 and 98.48 in 2016.
The worst performance in this region is by Krishnagiri, where the overall pass percentage dropped from 95.50 per cent last year to 93.12 per cent (-2.38 per cent). While the pass percentage of girls in the district was 94.53, the pass percentage of boys was only 91.76. This is despite an increase in the total number of schools that secured 100 per cent pass, up to 257 now, from 146 last year. The number of government schools that touched the figure also increased from 42 to 49. 
Like the Class 12 Board exams, the SSLC marks too were sent to the registered mobile numbers of the students, through SMS. But many students preferred going to their schools in Coimbatore, to compare their performance with that of their peers. Parents and children stood in long queues in many schools, to secure a berth for their wards in their preferred group in Class 11.
