Bangalore: A magnificent spell by leg-spinner Karn Sharma (4/16) and a quick-fire unbeaten 45 by Krunal Pandya steered Mumbai Indians to the championship clash of the tenth Vivo Indian Premier League. In a low-scoring match that was not short on the excitement that typifies the slam-bang variety, Mumbai Indians edged out Kolkata Knight Riders by six wickets in the second qualifier clash at M Chinnaswamy Stadium here on Friday.
The two-time champion will take on Rising Pune Supergiant (RPS) at Rajiv Gandhi International Cricket Stadium in Hyderabad on Sunday. Earlier, Sharma, who ably assisted by Jasprit Bumrah (3/7), was the wrecker-in-chief while accounting for Sunil Narine (10), Gautam Gambhir (12), Colin de Grandhomme (0) and Ishank Jaggi (28) to derail KKR's innings that was in tatters.
It was only Suryakumar Yadav (31) and Jaggi who managed to put a semblance of a fight with a 56-run association for the sixth wicket. Meanwhile, chasing the modest target, MI had a rough start after Lendl Simmons failed to pick a googly from Piyush Chawla and played down the wrong line to be dismissed LBW. Parthiv Patel edged a wide delivery to the wicket-keeper in the third over. MI was reduced to 34 for the loss of three wickets when Ambati Rayudu too played down the wrong line and lost his off-peg to Chawla.
However, skipper Rohit Sharma and Krunal Pandya steadied the innings with a 54-run partnership that took MI to the brink.Rohit (26) hit two fours and a six over long-on – before pulling a Nathan Coulter-Nile delivery to the man at square-leg. Krunal stayed on and completed the job; he hit eight boundaries in his 28-ball 45 and duly scored the winning runs.
Brief scores: Kolkata Knight Riders 107 (Suryakumar Yadav 31, Karn Sharma 4/16, Jasprit Bumrah 3/7) lost to Mumbai Indians 111 for four wickets in 14.3 overs (Krunal Pandya 45no, Piyush Chawla 2/34).
