Dean & Syd Release Groovy 'love' Video: Watch

Korean alt R&B singer Dean and Syd, aka The Internet’s Syd the Kid, dropped the smooth jam “love” on Friday (May 19).

With a subtle-yet-propulsive underlying beat, “love” is a jazzy tune that blends the pair’s voices. Kicking off with Syd’s sweet crooning, Dean joins in to deliver mellow verses, his tonal versatility driving the track’s subtle progression.

The single’s sensuality lies in the consent-driven lyrics, highlighted by the seductive promise, “I got intentions baby” and, later in the song, Dean’s assurance, “I need your blessin’, baby/ I’ll f--- you if you let me baby.”

This is the pair’s first time working together, though both are making their marks on the R&B world. Before releasing his first album, Dean collaborated with Anderson .Paak and Eric Bellinger in 2015, preceding his first EP's debut on the World Albums and Heatseekers Albums charts last year. Meanwhile, Syd’s appeared on the Billboard Twitter Emerging Artists chart multiple times this year and made her Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums debut in February with Fin.

“love” was written by Dean, Syd, Zak Abel, Miso and highhopes, while the vintage-themed video was directed by Psycho Films.

Taking place high above a Hollywoodland sign emulating the famous Los Angeles icon, the pair drop their verses atop a retro airplane, matching the feel of the predominantly black-and-white video that looks like it was plucked out of MGM’s archive, scratches and all. As the song's tonal shift occurs for Dean's dramatic delivery of the final verse, the set switches to a crimson-hued hell where Dean is poised as a satanic lover via overlaid animations. “love” comes to a close with a repetitive, final query: “Where is the love?”
