Kerala priest Tom Uzhunnalil rescued from IS captivity in Yemen; will return tonight

Indian priest Father Tom Uzhunnalil, who was allegedly captured by Islamic state has been released from captivity in Yemen on Tuesday. He will return to the country tonight.

According to reports, Uzhunnalil was freed following intervention from Oman government.

“He has been transferred to Muscat from where he will return to his home in Kerala,” a report published in Oman Observer said.

External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj took to Twitter to inform about the development.

“I am happy to inform that Father Tom Uzhunnalil has been rescued, she wrote on the micro-blogging site.”

Uzhunnalil, who belogs to Kerala’s Kottayam was abducted from a care home in Yemen’s southern port city of Aden last year. In December 2016, he had appealed Indian govt and Pope Francis to secure his release from his captors.

“They are treating me well to the extent they are able,” he said in the video released by a local channel.

“My health condition is deteriorating quickly and I require hospitalization as early as possible,” he pleaded in the recording.
