Safe ways to abort a one-month pregnancy: Medical, herbal and home methods explained
Abortion is legal in our country. This means that a woman has complete right to decide whether or not she wants to keep the baby she is carrying. In the case of an accidental pregnancy, if you don’t want to keep the baby, abortion under one month is perfectly safe. But instead of trying to abort at home using traditional methods, please visit a gynaecologist for a safe and complete abortion.
How a one-month pregnancy is terminated
The first method your doctor will recommend is a medical termination of pregnancy. In this method, the doctor will confirm your pregnancy and if you want to abort, will give you mifepristone pill. Most women feel no side effects after taking the pill but some may experience nausea. The purpose of this pill is to block the hormone progesterone that helps the pregnancy to continue and to make the uterine wall thinner.
After 6 to 72 hours of mifepristone, your doctor will give you a misoprostol tablet. The purpose of this drug is to make the uterus contract so the fetus is dislodged and expelled. During this time, you will experience cramping and menstrual bleeding that will probably be heavier than your regular menses. You may also have some diarrhea and nausea.
The fetus is extremely small at this stage and it generally passes unnoticed with the blood. It is recommended that you visit the doctor again in a week or two to ensure that the abortion is complete. However, you should also see the doctor immediately if you see any unnaturally heavy bleeding that requires up to two sanitary pads in an hour.
The bleeding will continue for about two weeks after a medical abortion, and even after that you may notice some spotting or light bleeding.
The second method of termination is surgical. There are two methods of doing this. The first method if a Manual Vacuum Aspiration in which the doctor inserts a medical tool inside your vagina to widen the opening of the cervix, following which he will use a suction tool to remove the fetus.
The second method is the Dilatation and Evacuation method, which only applies from the 13th week of pregnancy, and is therefore, outside the scope of this article.
In case of a MVA, the procedure happens over a very short period and in most cases, the amount of bleeding is also much lesser than in the case of a medical termination of pregnancy.
Usually, the medical method is preferred as the first method of abortion, but surgical abortion may be considered if the mother is unable to take the medicines because of any other pre-existing contraindicated conditions.
How painful is it to abort a one-month pregnancy?
No matter what form of abortion you choose, there will be a good deal of bleeding that is similar to very heavy periods. With this you will get pain that is similar to menstrual cramps, but more intense. Your doctor might give you a painkiller for the pain and ask you to be on rest till the worst pain is over.
In the case of surgical abortion, because a speculum will be inserted to dilate the cervix and a suction tube will be used to remove the fetus, you may have some pain or discomfort in the vagina.
See a doctor if you have exceptionally heavy periods, fever or severe pain that does not reduce with painkillers.
How safe is it to have a one-month abortion?
Both medical and surgical abortion of a one-month pregnancy are considered extremely safe. The pain and discomfort are common, and usually never a life-threatening condition. In addition, an abortion that happens within the first month normally has no bearings on any pregnancy you may choose to have later. But overall, a one-month abortion is at least 10 times safer than the health risks posed by continuing a pregnancy.
Can You Have a Baby Later?
Yes. When performed by a licensed medical professional, a one-month abortion is completely safe, whether it is medical or surgical. There are usually no complications and future pregnancies that you may choose to keep are not affected by this abortion.
How to abort one month pregnancy at home naturally
There are some methods to do an abortion at home if you are just one month pregnant. These home and herbal methods of inducing abortion are not entirely foolproof and you might still need to see a doctor if you don’t see significant bleeding after trying these.
- Papaya has phytochemicals that limit progesterone and induce contractions in the uterus to cause an abortion. Doctors advise women to avoid papaya because of this reason.
- Raw cinnamon or cinnamon supplements, when taken in significant doses, stimulates and contracts the uterus, leading to abortion.
- Sesame seeds, when soaked in water or taken with honey can also aid in abortion.
- Pineapples contain a proteolytic enzyme called bromelain that can soften the mouth of cervix leading to a natural abortion.
- Taking significant quantities of Vitamin C can also act as a progesterone inhibitor and cause abortion. Typically, 12-15 grams of Vitamin C is consumed daily for about 3 days to induce abortion.
- Parsley initiates contractions in the uterine wall that leads to menstruation, and therefore, the end of pregnancy.
See a doctor if you have tried any of these home and herbal methods of abortion of one-month pregnancy. It is better to be certain that the method was successful and that the entire pregnancy has been expelled.
