Rodan + Fields' Beloved Microneedler Is Coming Back
Rodan + Fields has more than 128,000 followers on Instagram and an entire Facebook page dedicated to its 174,000-plus members. No, they aren't celebrities. They're not even influencers. Though, the skin-care brand's loyal (and I mean, loyal) fans may beg to differ.
One scroll through any of Rodan + Fields' social media accounts and you'll quickly see just how invested the brand's fans (i.e. its consultants, who are the women and men who directly sell the brand's products). So much so that when word got out that Rodan + Fields would be bringing back its fan-favorite AMPMD Micro-Exfoliating Roller (a launch announced during its annual conference), it was as if the Internet combusted right then and there. Comments immediately began flooding in — and haven't stopped since.
The much-hyped-about AMPMD Micro-Exfoliating Roller was re-designed to be a more ergonomic, easy-to-use dermaroller, which gently removes dead skin cells and smooths skin's surface by literally tearing into the skin via tiny needles. "Wounding [the skin] triggers its repair functions, like producing new collagen to help smooth wrinkles," Neil Sadick, a clinical professor of dermatology at Weill Cornell Medical College in New York City, told Allure.
The reason for the microtearing is to "ready" the skin for whatever potent-packed product that follows, which allows the formula to seep deeper into the skin. When I test-drove the Micro-Exfoliating Roller after cleansing one night, I lightly ran the spiky tool over my skin in vertical, horizontal, and diagonal directions all over my face (and forehead, chin, and neck) for about a minute. Almost immediately, I noticed my skin was slightly inflamed (which is a good thing!), and it tingled (again, this is a good thing). I followed it up with a hydrating serum (lately, I've been into the SkinCeuticals Hyaluronic Acid Intensifer) and an antioxidant (and admittedly, super-luxe) night cream (like 3Lab's M Cream). It's literally so easy to use (and only takes 60 seconds!) that I've decided — starting right now — the dermaroller will be a constant in my nightly routine.

For microneedling newbies, Rodan + Fields recommends using the tool about three times a week (until your skin gets used to the sensation), and then working your way up to nightly rolling. The AMPMD Micro-Exfoliating Roller is available now, but unfortunately, there's a catch. It's not sold separately, but rather in a kit with the also new Intensive Renewing Serum for $220 at rodanandfields.com.
