Pair of ‘Sumi-ne’ handed over to AH & VS Zbto

Deputy commissioner of Zunheboto in a small programme held on November 8 handed over a pair of goats to the chief veterinary officer (CVO), Zunheboto, Dr. Toshi Aier. A press release by CVO Zunheboto stated that DC Tridebish Roy presented & handed over a pair of male & female goat to the CVO in the presence of the SDO (C) Namang Sepong Chang & other departmental officials. During a brief speech, DC stated that it was not for publicity that he had gifted the pair of goats but to preserve and propagate the highly valued animal for younger generation. CVO expressed happiness and gratitude on behalf of the department to the DC for gifting the animal. He said this gesture of presenting the animal was not only showing respect and encouragement to the department in particular but also the importance of the animal to the people in general. Further the CVO said that this act of generous contribution would go down the history in the development of “Sumi-Ne” preservation in the days to come. He also briefed the importance of the animal, commonly called as long hair goat. According to him, scientists and researchers from various institutes and university took keen interest and studied its phenotypic characteristics and genetic makeup. He added that concerned state department of Animal Husbandry & Veterinary Services had put all its effort and took active initiatives with government of India for registration of this particular animal as a breed. Finally, the National Bureau of Animal Genetic Resources (NBAGR) has confirmed and recognised this long hair goat as a breed and named officially as “Sumi-Ne”.
