Leading pediatrician and researcher Dr Pinaki Panigrahi has said India needed to invest hugely in primary health to reach the goal of universal health coverage.
In an exclusive interview to All India Radio, he cited the example of Turkey which has achieved full population coverage by boosting primary sector goals. Lauding Prime Minister's Swachh Bharat mission, Dr Panigrahi said cleanliness of environment is a key to prevent infections in newborn which are major killers of newborns in India.
A pioneer in neonatal sepsis research, Dr. Panigrahi said antimicrobial resistance is a major area of concern with several pathogens of sepsis now reporting immunity to drugs.
He said Government's immediate budget priority should be boosting anti microbial surveillance and also strengthening community awareness of clean surroundings and good nutrition practices. The full interview can be heard in the countrywide programme tonight on the FM Gold channel at 9.30.
