Karnataka results: What it means for 2019 polls

Though early trends in Karnataka Assembly election vote counting shows mixed trends, a victory means a lot for the BJP and Congress as the Lok Sabha elections is around the corner.

With no significant base in Tamilnadu, Andhra Pradesh and Kerala, the BJP would desperately want to win Karnataka which would be a boost ahead of the 2019 general elections. A victory here would mean more Rajya Sabha members for the party.

Interestingly, with Madhya Pradesh and Rajasthan to go for polls soon, the BJP would want a big win in the southern State.

For the Congress, Karnataka is one of the last States where they enjoy power. A defeat would mean a lot of questions would be raised about its president, Rahul’s leadership.

Also, he openly declared during the Karnataka campaign that he would be ready to be the prime ministerial candidate for 2019 polls.

Also, with West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee contemplating a third front, Congress needs a victory to stay afloat in Indian politics.
