B'desh 2004 grenade attack case: ex-minister Babar gets death
The attack on an Awami League rally on August 21, 2004 that targeted the now Prime Minister of Bangladesh Sheikh Hasina.
Tarique Rahman, son of the then prime minister Khaleda Zia, has been jailed for life along with 18 others. Former Deputy Minister for Education Abdus Salam Pintu was also handed the death penalty while BNP chief Khaleda Zia's former political secretary Harris Chowdhury was sentenced to life in prison. In instant reactions, Law Minister Anisul Huq has told UNI that the government will seek scaled-up punishments for Tarique Rahman and Harris Chowdhury. Both Tarique and Harris have been sentenced to life in prison. Huq accused Tarique of masterminding the attack and said he deserves death penalty, he added. Amid tight security, Dhaka's Speedy Trial Tribunal-1 judge Shahed Nuruddin delivered the verdict in capital city Dhaka.
