The Gujarat New Year, Bestu Varas, marks the beginning of the Kartik month of the Hindu calendar from November 8. President Ram Nath Kovind and Prime Minister Narendra Modi greeted the people of Gujarat on their New Year.
In his tweet, President Ram Nath Kovind said, "Saal Mubarak! (Happy New Year) Greetings and good wishes to all Gujaratis inIndia
and across theworld
marking the start of a New Year. May the coming year bring joy, peace, and prosperity to our families."
"New Year greetings to all Gujaratis. May the coming year lead to the fulfilment of all your aspirations. May everyone be healthy and happy. Saal Mubarak", the Prime Minister Modi said.
On this day Gujaratis clean their houses and decorate them. They also wear new clothes on this day. However, the most significant task is the beginning of new accounting books for business people. They close the previous accounting book and worship the new books by seeking the blessings of Goddess Lakshmi. This ritual is called the Chopda Puja.
In many states, today it is Govardhan Puja day which takes place on the next day of Diwali each year. In other states, people celebrate their New Year at the beginning of Chaitra month. However, Gujaratis consider the first day of Kartik to be auspicious for the celebration of New Year.
