Xiaomi's catalog of smartphones includes two Android One devices named Mi A1 and Mi A2. In order to fulfill the promises it made during their announcements, it upgraded the Mi A2 to Android Pie last month and now, it has started the same process for the predecessor. It has officially kicked off the Mi A1 Android Pie beta testing with an OTA update rolling out to all the beta testers.

This new Mi A1 update weighs a little over 1GB and upgrades the device to the latest Android version. The changelog for the update is titled "Android 9 - Pie powered by AI to make your Mi A1 smarter, simpler, and tailored to you". It is packed all the major Android Pie features including Adaptive Battery, Adaptive Brightness, new navigation gestures, and app/action recommendations based on the context and usage pattern. Xiaomi has even added FM Radio to the device which was not available on previous ROM versions.

Lastly, it updates the Android security patch level to the latest one which is dated December 5th, 2018.

It is a beta update which means it is likely to be plagued with undiscovered bugs and performance issues. This is the reason it is not advised to install the beta on your daily driver unless you are comfortable facing such instances. For those who are not part of the beta group or don't want to install a beta build, there will be some wait time but the stable version should roll out before the end of the year.

To give you an overview, the Xiaomi Mi A1 sports a 5.5-inch Full HD (1920 x 1080 pixels) LTPS IPS LCD display. It features the Qualcomm Snapdragon 625 processor coupled with 4GB of RAM and 64GB of internal storage. There is a 12-megapixel dual rear camera set up along with a 5-megapixel selfie camera. The whole package is powered by a 3080mAh battery. It was launched with Android 7.0 Nougat and was upgraded to Android 8.0 Oreo last year. Android Pie is the second major upgrade for the device which means it will be interesting to see if Xiaomi will release Android Q for the device as well or not.
