SGPC chief Gobind Singh Longowal 'slighted', PU loses ' Rs 15 lakh'

CHANDIGARH: A controversy erupted at Panjab University after Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC) president Gobind Singh Longowal was apparently not given enough time to speak at a seminar marking the 550th Parkash Utsav of Guru Nanak Dev on Thursday.Eyewitnesses say that as soon as SGPC presient started addressing the gathering, the academic in-charge of Guru Nanak Sikh Studies, Jaspal Kaur Kaang, interrupted him and said first let's have a book release by the PU vice-chancellor, since he had to rush to another event at Golden Jubilee Hall on the campus.Kaang interrupted him twice during the speech, and Longowal left in a huff in a few minutes with his supporters after giving the university a cheque for Rs 5 lakh.Jaspal Singh, former vice-chancellor of Punjabi University , Patiala, who was on the scene, claimed that: "The SGPC wanted to give the university a grant of Rs 20 lakh but since the SGPC president was not given time to address the gathering, he ended up sparing a much smaller amount.
