The trailer for Horror Noire digs into the history of black horror

More than most genres, horror movies give us a look at collective anxieties, insecurities, and fears. Zombies can be a stand-in for nuclear war, natural disasters, or even economic crashes. Vampires can represent disease, teen slashers the darker side of sex, and the list keeps going. And as Jordan Peele has shown with and the upcoming , horror can also be a stand-in for the terror of being black in America.

Peele’s movies are part of a storied history of black horror, and the streaming site Shudder has produced a documentary, , that takes a long look at that history. Based on the book of the same name by Dr. Robin R. Means Coleman, it brings together critics, filmmakers, and even the stars of movies like and to talk about the role of black creatives in the movie industry and how the genre reflects life in such an overtly racist country.
