PKL 2019 | The team is in a spot of bother, says J Udaya Kumar
Tamil Thalaivas’ new coach J Udaya Kumar, after their 16-point loss against Dabang Delhi, said that the team is in trouble as they lack team chemistry and are doing well only individually. He also said that they only need one win because confidence eventually breeds good performances.
Tamil Thalaivas suffered their 6th consecutive loss and that too by 16 points, with Dabang Delhi K.C finishing with a season-high 50 points. They started well as Mohit Chillar tackled Naveen Kumar in his very first raid and even Rahul Chaudhari got a point in his first raid. However, their rhythm did not last for long as both Naveen Kumar and Meraj Sheykh eventually started taking points in successive raids for Delhi.
The Thalaivas were all out in just under 8 minutes and by then were already lagging behind by six points. They were all-out for a second time a mere 2 minutes before half-time and ended the first half with a scoreline of 24-12. Their defence unit disappointed them the most as they scored only 3 points, one point by Mohit Chillar and 2 points by Substitute Sagar.
They had as many as 24 unsuccessful tackles, which for a team which has experienced players like Manjeet Chillar and Ran Singh, this was a very under-par performance. The raiding unit performed better as V.Ajith Kumar started well and had 9 points to his name, while Rahul Chaudhari took his time but he eventually scored 14 points but Ajay Kumar was not able to get on the score-sheet.
“We tried a personnel change in this match. They played well as individuals, but the chemistry is lacking as of now. The team is in a spot of bother. We need to regroup quickly and improve. I knew we would have to improvise in some areas but the condition hasn’t improved as the season has progressed," Tamil Thalaivas coach J Udaya Kumar said in the post-match press conference.
"We need to improve not only on the mat but also off it, mentally. All we need is a win. Once we get a victory, we'll get confidence. Confidence breeds good performances. So we need to look for that win,” concluded Udaya Kumar.
