Tamil music streaming activity increases by 272%

Chennai: Tamil music streaming registered a robust growth of 272%, increasing from 188.28 million streams between April and December 2018 to 702.04 million streams between January and September 2019, reports JioSaavn. Since 2005, the advent of online streaming has completely transformed the music industry in India.

With growing smartphone penetration and digital adoption expected to drive further growth, South Asia’s largest music streaming service JioSaavn has mapped the latest digital streaming trends across the country to find out what India is listening to by analysing its platform data between January and September 2019. Amongst the most positive trends identified by JioSaavn was the growing popularity of non-Bollywood music in the country, where regional language music contributed to 20% of the top streamed songs.

Another interesting trend noted by JioSaavn is the growth of music directors topping artist charts, which was previously dominated by playback singers. Sid Sriram continues to be the exception holding strong ground as the third most streamed artist in the language, with artists and music directors such as Anirudh Ravichander and A R Rahman also featuring prominently on the playlists of JioSaavn users.

Chennai, Coimbatore and Salem saw the maximum number of music streams in Tamil, while ‘Dance Machi Dance’, ‘Madras Melodies’ and ‘Freshestu First’ were the most streamed playlists.
