Senior Constable Alistair Parsons said the woman took a seat in the second carriage and observed a man littering on the train.
“The (man) then approached the woman, became aggressive and spat on her,” he said.
Police have released an image of a man they are hoping to identify over the incident.
He is described as caucasian, aged between 40 and 50 years old, with short brown hair and brown eyes.
He had a moustache and was wearing a black hooded jumper and grey pants.
Anyone who recognises the man is urged to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
